Edgar Aronggear Steals the Show at Papua Sagu Festival 2026 with Yosim Pancar Performance

JAYAPURA, LELEMUKU.COM – The Papua Sagu Festival 2026 in Jayapura City, Papua Province, Indonesia, reached a new high point with a captivating performance by prominent local musician Edgar Aronggear, representing the Papua Music Artists Alliance, who drew crowds into a cultural celebration through a set of songs deeply rooted in Papuan tradition on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

Edgar performed a selection of works specially curated around the festival's central theme of sago, while affirming that the Yosim Pancar genre remains the cornerstone of his musical identity.

"Yosim Pancar is my way of entertaining people with what I have to offer," he said.

Originally scheduled for just 15 minutes, the performance was extended after strong demand from the audience prompted the Head of the Ministry of Law (Kemenkum), Anthonius Ayorbaba, to authorize additional stage time for the artist.

Aronggear noted that communities across Papua Province, particularly in and around Jayapura, are in genuine need of quality entertainment such as what the festival provides.

"People are deeply entertained by the distinct character of Papua, especially Yosim Pancar and the humorous stories we bring to the stage. The Sagu Festival also opens up real opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses across Papua," he said.

Addressing a degree of disappointment expressed by some figures in the entertainment industry over aspects of the event's organization, Aronggear stressed the importance of a sense of ownership toward the land of Papua. While coordination with organizers matters, he argued that love for culture must come first.

"This is a matter of ownership. If we truly feel that toward our culture, then wherever there is song, there is life. If you feel Papua belongs to you, the focus should be on the work," he said firmly.

Beyond entertainment, Aronggear also highlighted the need for stronger legal protections for artists across Papua. He expressed appreciation for the Papua Ministry of Law and Human Rights for providing a solid legal framework and institutional space for local musicians.

"Through this collaboration, the hope is that Papuan artists will not simply perform without direction, but will have real bargaining power and clear legal protection for their work," he added. (Laura)
